Elastic Properties of Nematic Liquid Crystals Formed by Living and Migrating Cells

چکیده
In culture migrating and interacting amoeboid cells can form nematic liquid crystal phases. A polar nematic liquid crystal is formed if the interaction has a polar symmetry. One type of white blood cells (granulocytes) form clusters where the cells are oriented towards the center. The core of such an orientational defect (disclination) is either a granulocyte forced to be in an isotropic state or another cell type like a monocyte. An apolar nematic liquid crystal is formed if the interaction has an apolar symmetry. Different cell types like human melanocytes (=pigment cells of the skin), human fibroblasts (=connective tissue cells), human osteoblasts (=bone cells), human adipocytes (= fat cells) etc., form an apolar nematic liquid crystal. The orientational elastic energy is derived and the orientational defects (disclination) of nematic liquid crystals are investigated. The existence of half-numbered disclinations show that the nematic phase has an apolar symmetry. The densityand order parameter dependence of the orientational elastic constants and their absolute values are estimated. From the defect structure, one finds that the splay elastic constant is smaller than the bend elastic constant (melanocytes). The core of a disclination is either a cell free space or occupied by non oriented cells (isotropic phase) or occupied by a cell with a different symmetry or occupied by another cell type.

Interfacial energy for nematic liquid crystals : beyond the spherical approximation
By means of a simple pseudomolecular model the surface elastic properties of nematic liquid crystals are analysed. We show that in the Maier-Saupe approximation for the intermolecular interaction and supposing the interaction volume of ellipsoidal shape, the bulk elastic constants of splay and twist are expected to be equal and different from the bend one. The dependence of the bulk elastic con...
متن کاملThe Nematic Phases of Bent-Core Liquid Crystals
Over the last ten years, the nematic phases of liquid crystals formed from bent-core structures have provoked considerable research because of their remarkable properties. This Minireview summarises some recent measurements of the physical properties of these systems, as well as describing some new data. We concentrate on oxadiazole-based materials as exemplars of this class of nematogens, but ...
متن کاملPhysical properties of the nematic liquid crystal, APAPA. Optical determination of the viscoelastic and elastic ratios
2014 We report a study of the viscoelastic and elastic properties of a nematic liquid crystal as measured by static and dynamic light scattering. Experimental values are reported for the splay/twist/bend elastic and viscoelastic ratio as well as for the Mi0119sowicz viscosity ratio ~1/~3 of APAPA in the nematic region as a function of temperature. متن کاملInvestigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals
Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...
متن کاملCapillary-induced giant elastic dipoles in thin nematic films.
Directed and true self-assembly mechanisms in nematic liquid crystal colloids rely on specific interactions between microparticles and the topological defects of the matrix. Most ordered structures formed in thin nematic cells are thus based on elastic multipoles consisting of a particle and nearby defects. Here, we report, for the first time to our knowledge, the existence of giant elastic dip...
